RTV-5000 sticks like a broken record

My Sonicblue 5000 unit works fine sometime for days at time then for no
known reason will go into a siezure repeating a fraction of a second of
video and audio endlessly until I unplug the unit. All buttons on the
remote seem useless.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a software or hardware problem?

If it's a hard drive about to fail (my guess) is replacing the hard
drive an amature's project and if not, who will do it and at what cost?

I've occasionally read messages where people discuss replacing a hard
drive, but it seems beyond me.

2 Possible causes are:

1) If you watch live a lot and/or have a nearly full drive, you'll have
problems.

2) The drive is dying. Put a 300gig in there and go crazy. A chimp could
do it. The FAQ on the Replay forum at avsforums.com has the files and
instructions. You can also get a pre-done drive from Mikeyboy on the
forum if you can't find a chimp, or don't want to open your PC to set
the drive up.

I put in a 160GB drive in my 5040 recently, and patched it by putting it
in my PC first. Easy for me--I built my PC from scratch--but still a pain.

I've seen you can buy USB-IDE adapters for about $20 on eBay ($40-50
from online retailers). Can you prep and patch a new RTV drive with the
RTVPatch software by USB adapter? I don't see why you couldn't, but I'm
wondering if anyone's had experience doing that. Seems a lot easier and
cleaner.

No, I believe RTVPatch will only "see" drives on an ide channel.

Yes and no... (I was playing a RePlay file on a PC at the time... I'd
dropped the Hard Drive and there was some damage. (It's replaced now)

I'd suspect a HD that is starting to fail

Well Youngster... RECORD has multiple meanings

For example A Record is a report of who was best, or worst, or biggest
or fastest or ,,,, who did the most or something like that

IE: Babe Ruth's Home Run Record.


It is also the flat, usually (but not always) Black, Usually (But not
always) Vinyl Grooved disk that we senior citizens used to put on
turntables so we could listen to recorded music while putting up with
clicks and pops and hiss and all that good stuff that digital has done
away with.

There are. of course, folks who insist it's still the best medium and
these new-fangled CD's are not as good.... You will find I'm not among
that group... I rather like CD, and MD, and DVD, and other digital D's

Now here is a question for some readers....

On a standard 45rpm Vinyl Single record... How many grooves per side?

I have a quadrafonic terntable (it's very high quality when used for
Stereo) Don't have a quad amp to go with it, The original "Surround
Sound" by the way

Never encountered that two grove LP

And yes, one is the correct answer

I've nothign against records, Like you, I have a good collection.

Today I bum mostly CD but still come across the occasional LP, and yes,
the LP jackets, being much larger, could and did contain much more
information

It's a rotating serving table used in an "all you can eat" restaurant.
It is used when all the guests have eaten so much they can't move, and
the food needs to be brought closer to them.

It is a round table that turns... Usually at either 45rpm or 33 1/3 rpm
but 16 3/4 rpm is possible on some models as is 78rpm on some, and some
are variable speed as well

Yes. Remove the cable input, or any antenna input. When you would normally
get the
white fuzz of a normal TV tuner the replay will do two things:
1) It will display a blue blank screen indicating no signal.
2) It will stop recording (buffering), which enables you to go into the
replay guide, and delete some stuff.

This happened to me when the hard disk filled, which isn't really supposed
to happen, but it can...
