Solved! Rufus won't boot on ancient HP Probook 640

This is a bit of an idle question on Rufus. There doesn't appear to be an official Rufus support forum but most Google searches end up here. But if there is an official forum, I'd love to know where it is.

I'm rebuilding an old but functional HP Probook 640 G1 for a charity. They have Windows 10 MAK licenses coming out of their ears so I've download Windows 10 20H2 from VLSC and used Rufus to burn onto a 16GB USB.

Can't get it to work with UEFI but I'm not too worried as MBR/BIOS boot works okay. But intrigued why not as the BIOS supports UEFI.

1. USB created using these options:

2. Configure with UEFI native (no CSM):

3. The laptop won't even recognise the drive:

4. Switch to UEFI hybrid (with CSM):

5. Laptop will recognise the USB drive:

Any idea a) why the drive is not even seen on UEFI native and b) the cause of that screen corruption?

when booting with secure boot off, please ensure legacy is ticked. thanks
