Hi,

I've got a Sagem ITD 62 Freeview Set Top Box.

I want to be able to record from it on my video and DVD recorder. However,
it seems like the only way that you can record from this box is by
connecting a scart cable to the video/DVD recorder.

With my old freeview box I could simply tune it in to a specific channel (22
in that case) just like an ordinary station such as BBC1 etc. as it would
presumably send the required signal through the RF aerial cable. However,
I've gone through all the channels but neither the video or DVD recorder
will pick up a signal from the freeview box.

Is there anyway that I can still get this Sagem box to send a signal through
the RF cable like the old box? Am I doing anything wrong? Is there a
setting for the box that will allow me to do this?

Thanks

Andy

I think this box simply has a loop through of your aerial rather than a UHF
modulated output of its own signal.

Your video / DVD recorder should have an 'AV' channel selectable so that
signals via Scart get recorded.

Yes I know. However, when I do this I can only record from either the DVD
recorder or the video and not BOTH, which is what I could do with the old
freeview box that simply transmitted through the RF cable.

I only have one spare scart on the freeview box and so can only connect it
to either the video OR DVD recorder and not both.

Andy,

Ran into exactly this problem last week setting one up for my Mum.
Unfortunately the 62 doesn't have an RF modulator. There's a cheaper
Sagem that does (58 or 60?) but we couldn't find anyone with it in
stock. In the end she took it back and bought a Thomson instead,
although it cost £15 more... Shame, as the Sagem was a nice little
box!

Anyway, look out for 'RF modulator' rather than 'RF loop-through' on
the packaging of any replacement you might buy...

Guessing.... go into the setup menu and make sure you have PAL-I selected
and 0 offset if that is selectable.

The way you had your old Freeview box may have worked, but there are several
disadvantages of connecting a TV to the RF out.

The main one is the sound. You will have been recording everything in MONO
with greatly reduced frequency and dynamic range and possibly even a little
caption-buzz for good measure.

Also the picture quality would have suffered, although I must admit that
often goes unnoticed at VHS qualities.

However in the case of a DVDR or PVR it would be sacrilegious to connect a
set-top box using RF.
You will get a noticeable lack of quality compared to SCART, and that is
especially true if your DVDR can handle RGB INPUT as well as output.

Also, if your TV handles SCART inputs intelligently, (most do), automatic
selection of the DVD source when you hit 'play'
Plus a SCART connection should deal with automatic windscreen switching,
And, of course, stereo sound.

IMHO the only use for RF output on those boxes that have it, is to supply a
signal to sets in other rooms.

True enough... but sometimes it's the only way. My mother has a small
Sony TV with just one SCART input. She also has a VHS and somebody
just bought her a DVD player.

She needs to be able to view and record the Freeview receiver and
watch DVD's with absolutely minimal messing about as she's completely
technically illiterate. : )

The Sony TV always takes RGB if it's offered, irrespective of what
else you do. So, if you connect the Freeview to the SCART on the TV,
the TV always shows RGB from the Freeview, BUT it takes its syncs from
any other source you subsequently select! So she was going to end up
getting her knickers in a twist and seeing rolling or shifted pictures
etc... so in the end the best way forward was to connect the DVD
player via RGB and tell her to turn it off when not in use, and
everything else via RF.

The quality is much poorer, but sometimes RF is much the simpler
method... and to be honest, my mum can't see any problem!

Wouldn't it have been cheeper to buy a seperate RF modulator?
