Samsung smart tv and basic Verizon cable

I hooked my Samsung HD smart tv up to a Verizon basic Fios box. The picture is ugly and in black and white. How do I fix this?

I have to check how I hooked it up once in get in and look at it. I was wondering if I had to up-grade to HD cable service in that room?
