Saving searches

Does a 5040 save searches? In other words, if I've searched for "Good
Eats," does it save this search or do I have to retype it in? Also, if I
want all first-run episodes of "Good Eats" taped, how do I do this? (By
this, I mean that I would like all Good Eats shows that haven't been taped
before to be taped.)

Thanks!

Sounds like what you want is a theme channel (this useful feature is
ignored too much). You set it up once (search for "good eats" and look
for the option). Then the shows are recorded automatically (any time,
any channel) as long as you can get a channel with that show. It will
not record a show again if the previous recording is still on the
Replay (this works only for shows with episode titles).

No, it doesn't save the searches.

There's no way to not record an episode that hasn't been recorded
before. The RTV doesn't keep records of this. Your only options are to
record only new shows (no repeats) or everything (including repeats). If
you get a show that you've recorded before, then simply delete that one
show...

Except for when the show is still on the Replay.

Or keep it to prevent re-recording.

Never used theme channels? That's a big part of why the Replay is so
useful.

I wondered what this was. Apparently, reading the manual would help!

I should say that I'm used to Dish's PVR, which was basically a VCR with a
hard drive. So, that's why I was confused. I like satellite more than
cable, but there's no way to get cable without cutting down some trees at
my new house.

Whether you have cable or satellite, a seperate DVR is more
versatilethan an integrated one.

So does the Replay forget a show as soon as it is deleted, or does it
have something like TiVo's 28 day rule?

On a TiVo it won't re-record the same episode within 28 days even if
it is deleted. This is nice with a lot of cable shows that repeat
over and over for a few weeks.

You can override this by telling it to record 'All episodes (including
duplicates)' - instead of the 'First Run and Repeats' or 'First Run
Only' options.

What are the equivalent features of the RTV?

Well, it depends on what the context is - they can record from any
analog source and so are more versatile in that way.

But many of the integrated satellite DVRs have dual tuners, something
none of the standalone units have - and therefore they're more
versatile when it comes to conflict resolution.

Pluses and minuses in both cases.

Can you setup a theme that doesn't auto-record? Like a stored search?
I'm thinking of something like TiVo Wishlists which you can have
auto-record or not - where you can save the search and check it
manually if you don't want it recording on its own.

What kind of criteria can you setup a theme channel on? Title?
Keyword? Director? Actor? Category?

As you now know, the basic answer is no.

This is an admitted kludge, but if you really have one or two searches that
you run all the time, one option would be to set up a macro on a universal
remote that you could use to enter your search term with one press.

Seems to be no such rule, it;s just if the recording is present. Maybe
it would rerecord it if you left a recording on for 28 days, I
normally don't.

Does "first run only" actually check that list of things you
recorded, or is it just checking a flag (supplied by the service,
unrelated to what YOU've recorded) that's part of the guide? There's a
big difference there. Seems like you may have gotten mixed up.

And all things have both ADVANTAGES and DISADVANTAGES. People do have
a problem of looking at just one side of something.

You can have 2 Replays, although it's still not the same as a
dual-tuner unit (lacks the schedule management).

No. Note that DVArchive software can help with the conflicts that can

There could be a serious problem there, considering the fact that some
IR pulses don't get through. That even happens with the 4-digit
channel numbers require with recent satellite receivers. You need to
make sure that conditions are really good before sending that macro.

I've used a Pronto for quite a while, and I rarely have a missed IR code
(although it seems to happen when you "show off" your system to others).
They do occur, however, so I have extra "power on" and other codes strewn
appropriately about.

Mistakes by trying harder to get it right? That often happens.

That (duplicate codes) will work if you don't mind the extra time,
have a remote with enough capacity (the Pronto should be fine here),
and the button to be duplicated is not state-dependant (such as a
toggle, or the number keys). Most of the buttons ARE state-dependant
(like 'pause' which will pause some times, unpause (resume) some
times, do nothing other times).

The 28 day rule *ALWAYS* applies - UNLESS you tell it "All episodes
(including duplicates)". It is applied before the first run only /
first run & repeats check is done.

First Run Only then checks the guide data - basically if the episode
isn't flagged as a repeat it is considered first run. (So shows with
weak data are always first run - it errs on the side of recording
things instead of skipping them.)

'First Run' has its own ruleset actually, I forget all the details,
but I think all airings of an episode of a show within two weeks of
the real *first* airing is still first run. But that's within the 28
day rule block so it'll only record it once. But that means if there
is a conflict on the real 'first' airing of the episode so it doesn't
record, but it does repeat within two weeks (like many cable shows do)
it'll still be recorded with a 'First Run Only' Season Pass.

Actually, the state-dependent stuff is what makes the Pronto so hard to
program, as you can't say "if you're in this state, then do this", as
sometimes you don't know whether you're in that state (some stuff doesn't
have discrete on or off), and the Pronto doesn't store state. So, you're
right.
