Screen goes all crazy, purple and green

My wife's laptop has started doing some crazy stuff. The screen will randomly turn purple and green, and the colors move all over the place. (See the photo).

I have no idea what it could be.
Her laptop is an HP Pavilion Notebook, Intel i7, windows 10. It's a couple years old I think.

If the ribbon cable is fine, and the external monitor shows fine, then the attached display is probably the culprit and needs replacing.

Yikes. Seems to me that it is the Graphics card/GPU, but to check try the following...

1. Turn off the laptop.
2. Connect an external monitor.
3. Turn on the external monitor.
4. Turn on the laptop.

Can you see all the screens fine on the external monitor?

If yes, then the attached display is the issue. First you would need to check (or have a tech check) the ribbon cable that connects the display and if it isn't that, then the display will need replacing.

If no, and you can't see anything on the external monitor either, then the graphics card/GPU will probably need replacing, which means the motherboard probably will need to be replaced.

So, it didn't do it for a couple days, then it started doing it again. It doesn't do it all the time, and when it starts, usually hitting the back of the screen, and shaking it a bit makes it work again. But lately that's been working less and less.

So I hooked it up to another monitor like you suggested (used my TV via HDMI), and the screen was fine (pic included).

So I took it apart to see if maybe there was a loose wire. Nothing. All the wires were fine. But I unplugged them and plugged them back in just in case. But, nothing. So, I'm wondering if it might be the screen itself like you said?
