Second replay need subscription?

I want to add a second replaytv to my network. This won't be needed to
record except occasionally from the analog inputs.

I want to use the second replay to stream recorded shows to another
room.

I've searched all the message headers here and find no reference to
this, probably often-asked, question. Please tell me I won't need a
second subscription.... Now, please tell me the truth.

Thanks,
Dick

You'll need to activate the unit to continue using it. It would be nice
if they offered a remote non recording unit but they don't. However,
using DVArchive you can use that old PC in the closet to do the same
thing.

Thanks for the reply.

Are you saying that a replaytv is _absolutely worthless_ without a
subscription?

I do use DVArchive but find Java to be less than good software, in my
opinion. DVArchive has stopped working on my p4 and uninstalling and
reinstalling both java and DVArchive has failed to fix the problem.
(XPPro)

Personally, I think Java is pure junk. Is it trying to be an operating
system? A program?

I have a virgin win98 SE install that runs DVArchive but refuses to
play shows. I can import them and then copy the mpeg to my p4 and play
it there but it needs to transfer the entire file before play starts.

My laptop (XPPro) will run DVArchive well but I only have a 40 gig
drive there. It's not a good solution.

All I want is to be able to stream video from the replaytv without
waiting for the entire show to be copied.

A properly functioning DVArchive might do the trick.

Not quite absolutely worthless. There's always the possability of a

him on the head with :)

When I tried DVArchive on ME, it barely worked (worked once, then
never again until OS reinstalled).

It's working better now on Win2000. It works to transfer shows to PC.
I also use it as a guide server (view guide and schedule shows from
any networked PC). It has never been recognized by one of the Replays.

Maybe something like the BASIC "interpreter" on the old home
computers. Needed to run programs.

I'd rather have a program that runs directly on Windows.

I use mine to put shows on DVD-R, as well as for the guide.

I refuse to use XP (considering that built-in self-destruct device).
Anyway, you can store the shows on a networked drive.

I still don't like Java. I have java & DVArchive running on three
different computers and all three will lock up randomly. I maintain
that java and dvarchive are not as solid as win me was.

And I thought microsoft was the winner in the
almost-good-enough-software contest.

Yep - current ReplayTV units (and *most* current TiVo units) are
pretty much doorstops without a subscription - lifetime or monthly.

>Personally, I think Java is pure junk. Is it trying to be an operating

I've never really had a problem with Java - as both a programmer and a
user. Java isn't an OS, nothing like it. I don't understand how
anyone could even think it was trying to be one. Just because it is a
'virtual machine'? Java is a solid platform - it had way too much
hype when it came out, and it isn't the end all and be all of
programming languages, but it has a role. MS thinks it is good enough
to copy - see C#, which is very Java like.

Java prevents the most common mistakes that bite C/C++ programmers,
with the added benefit of being cross-platform.

What is 'directly'?

Java has the JVM. C# has the CLI (Common Language Interpreter, not
Command Line Interface). VB uses an engine that runs on top of the
OS, but is generally hidden from the user. A lot of Windows
applications use DLLs to handle things, and the DLLs sit 'between' the
app and the OS in some cases.

You forget that Java runs on top of Windows, and Microsoft and Sun don't
like each other.

Sorry, poor choice of word. I mean it runs on the CPU. Java programs
don't, but are interpreted.

Of course it's not going to be as stable. There's more there to mess
up. Extra complexity (the Java too) does this.

It does seem to run longer on Win2000 (there's also that thing about
making more memory available to a Java program.

At least on Win2000, when it does crash it doesn't crash the whole
system like it does with Win 9x.
