Setting up Surround Sound?

Just picked up an LG TV with all the speakers, DVD player etc.

I've plugged everything in, however I want to know if it's possible to have surround sound all the time when switching between HDMI inputs (Computer, Cable TV).

Currently, I only have it when watching DVDs on the player. I'm sure everything is set up correctly, do I need an AV Receiver with this though?

It would help to post the models of the TV, speakers, DVD player, cable box, but you might need an AVR or surround sound preamp.
