Should I update this old vista laptop to Win 7?-Dell Inspiron 1501

I've been working on an old laptop i got from my uncle (he gave it to me free after lending me a pair of 23" monitors i have to pay him for later).

Laptop Specs:
Dell Inspiron 1501
AMD Sempron 3600+ 2.0ghz
OEM Hitachi 80GB HDD (bad)- Replaced with HGST 500GB HDD (after a lot of reformatting)
current OS-Vista Home Prem 32-bit SP2 (reinstalled via CD's that came with it)
RAM-OEM 1GB (2x512MB) DDR2-667-Upgraded to 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2-667
Also upgrading the WLAN card later as the OEM one gets 11Kbps (using a netgear USB adapter for updates). Keyboard was reconnected as well, works perfectly.

I downloaded windows 7 upgrade advisor on it, and it says that I could upgrade using custom install on boot.
Will this work with my Win 7 Pro 64 bit install CD or bootable USB?

Note: I plan to sell this after modernizing it a bit. If you guys can also give me an idea of a fair market value after upgrades, Id appreciate that as well

It's a pretty old, low power laptop. You may be better off putting a Linux distro on it, such as Linux Mint. I doubt there's much value to resell it.

update:
It works!
Installed 64 bit win 7 pro via bootable usb
Custom installed (after getting vista updated to service pack 2)
No major issues, all 4GB of RAM show up (as opposed to 2.6 on 32bit vista)

now for the WLAN card...

UPDATE:
WLAN has been updated.
However, I went ahead and installed Linux Mint 64 bit due to the WIn 7 installation being already used
