Simple HD questions

I want to buy a HD TV later and I don't trust some salesmen.

The formats are 1080i and 1080p (and lower modes.)
Which is the HIGHEST quality signal?
I guess the progressive 1080p because it's non-interlace.,
(I read 1080i is the highest, that doesn't make sense to me)

What is the highest signal a DVD player can send? (What cable will you use to get the best signal out of a normal DVD player? )

What is the quality of normal NTSC in the new measurement? Like 420i ?
What is the highest signal a HD DVD player can send?

I understand PC video fairly well, so you can answer in that terminology.
I just try to understand this.

1080p is the highest. The difference from 1080i should look about the same as going from a regular DVD player to a progressive scan DVD player. You need a HDTV to fully realize the difference between the 2 DVD players.

On a progressive scan DVD player you need component cables or a dvi
cable for the best picture.

As for highest signal a DVD player can send I believe it's 540. My Toshiba
claims it puts out 540p.

If your getting an HDTV I'd go for 1080p!
