Hi guys,

I'm stuck between the two players.

Sony:
-super long battery life (50 hrs+)
-easy battery replacement
-no harddrive to break from running
-cheap media
-long playback with the 1GB disk at ATRAC3 64Kbps

Ipod
-sexy design
-hold all my music collection
-supposingly fairly easy to use

The 15gig Ipod is only $100 more than the sony MD players coming out. My question is, how is sony's user interface on the player? Would it allow me to skip through folder or search for a particular song??

Also, I know the sony simpleburn has some sort of copy rights management. I have ripped many of my purchased CDs onto my computer. How is simpleBurn going to deal with my mp3s??

Between the two, which one would you guys get??

how good is the atrac 3 sound quality? I know this guy with a sony hdd based car kit. The quality in that for ripped music is terrible.

Atrac 3 LP4 is a poor 66Kbps , Atrac 3 LP2 is 132 Kbps, and Atrac is 292 Kbps

Atrac 3 LP2 is the lowest i will go persoanlly.

anyway the new ones look wicked.

yep i am going to buy the "classic mp3 player" see it for urself at tiger direct . Trust me, unless you are going to drop your mp3 player a dozen times then u should go with a harddrive model. Although md is quick alternative because you dont have to worry about that hardrive breaking, it is alot easier to use and more efficent (wallet friendly).

Hi

I haven't heard good reviews of a Sony MP3 player before.
I'd say your best bet is the iPod :)

Hi,

I've got the 40Gb Ipod, so i can vouch for it.
It's one of the best buys i've made in a while especially for all the add on things you can get for it (i also use it to download my Digital Camera pictures once my Memory car is full, IT's Great cos i never need a PC, never need a Photo developed shop, can store 1000's of pics and listen to music at the same time!)

but yeah, the ipods easy to use and everything else and now with the new iTunes, it's even better and easier to use.

But i have to say that the sony one is also very good but it's only one gig for alot of $$$

have you looked at the ipod mini? or even the creative mini players (1gb - 4gb) (though i probably wouldn't recommend it :))

cheers

I liked the idea of Ipod mini, and since I have a laptop with a built in card reader, I can download pictures from my digi camera anywhere.

The only thing I dont like about Ipod mini is that it doesn't come with a remote for headphones nor a docking station. A full blown Ipod is too big for my purposes (mostly GYM and occasionally studying). Also, I dont think I'll need over 4 gigs of storage.

The Ipod mini doesn't come to Canada until April, so I'll just have to wait until Futureshop gets it in. Then I can purchase it w/ extended warranty with their staff discount :)

from what i saw of the ipod mini on techtv, it didn't actually seem that small, i looked at it and it wasn't even half the size of the Ipod i don't think. but i dunno, we don't even have Ipods in my country (well if we do they are soo uncommon its not funny)

Isn't the point of the Hi-MD format that you can store 1gb per MD? So you could buy 10 of them have 10GBs of space.

They certainly look good, but the copyright issues seem a put off, as does the fact it doesn't natively support MP3.

i certainly hope i'm not giving incorrect info,,,,,,but i talked to several support reps at sony(they all had different answers, which is why i am a bit unclear about this),,,,,,but the conclusion was that it takes approx 20second to load an existing 3mg mp3 from your pc to the sony player, because of the time it takes to convert an mp3 to atrac. when i first read the the info, it sounded like mp3 could only be converted IN REAL TIME,,,which is why i called support ,,because this sounded ridiculous...... unacceptable, imo

The mp3 does not have to be encoded in real time and the time it takes to transfer an existing mp3 to your minidisc player will vary. The reason is encoding depends on processor speed. If you own a Piii, it will be slower than a AthlonXP.

Buy the Ipod. Stay away from Sony, you have to convert to atrac first. ANY conversion will make sound crappier than the original, and mp3 isn't exactly a sound rich codec. You have to waste time and hard drive space.
