I just got the 'ylod' yesterday on a 60gb launch model. I think the 0.5% failure rate quoted is a lie. When asked, Sony won't reveal the actual numbers or models of consoles affected. I'm betting there's going to be a HUGE amount of these lauch consoles dying over the next 6 months. Sony has their money already, so they don't care..

I think the oven have to be preheated to 250. put the mother board in for 10 minutes. I personally have not tried this fix but i am going to tonight. I have had the yellow light of death once, and what i did was replaced the ribbon connecting the blu ray drive and it had seemed to work fine after. I got my ps3 the first week it came out and this is the only problem i have had with it. advice to anyone, try to fix it yourself before paying 150 to get it fixed. unless you are a retard. P.S. the 250 degree oven for 10 minutes is just a rumor i had heard. Look it up on google or something. It will be there

I didn't have the Yellow Light of Death, I had the Red Screen of Death. Out of warranty (no receipt to show) but Sony fixed it for free...for some reason.

I have a good idea for all of you!! Buy your PS3 from Best Buy with a 2 year protection plan, and if that bitch breaks, take it up there and they will give you a gift card for the same price you paid for your PS3 whenever you bought it. Mine had a weird problem, the sound stopped working on the HDMI output. about 7 months before my 2 years was up. I took it up there, and they gave me a gift card for $432 since I paid $399+tax for it at the time. Of course now, the PS3 is only $299, so I got a new 120GB PS3 (old one was 40GB), a few Wii items, and a new protection plan and didn't pay anything, because I got a free $108 from Best Buy technically. That is the best way to go, I can assure you!

I hardly ever used the PS3, but when I did it was in an open space (top of a dresser), and was dust free (air compressors are very useful in this department). Hadn't even heard of Yellow Light of Death, but PS3 is now less useful than a paper weight after probably 100 hours of use. Can't say I'm surprised, however, considering how many different Sony products I've seen break over the years. As a long-standing consumer of Sony products, I can't say I'd ever recommend one again. They really don't care about the consumer and I can't help but reflect those feelings right back.

0.5% failure is a huge % of defective and is not normal in the industries - espeacially Japanese. How could sony possibly accept 95% yield as normal? They should have recalled the defective units and replace or fix them FOC. Who would pay 4xx USD for a game console that lasts a year and a half!!!

12,500 / 2,500,000 = .005 = 1/2 of 1%.... simple math people.... I have owned my PS3 for around 30 months and just recently got ylod'd. Fixed it myself. *hint* youtube and gilksy are your best friend. do i think sony is responcible for my issue no, would it be nice if they would cover this issue under thier warranty, yes. my ps3 was dusty and i never shut it off but a handful of times in 2+ yrs. my problem so i educated myself and fixed it...suck it up people

first of all 0.5% of bbillions or people who have bought this product is alot of people second they priced the first models at about 500 us dollars some up to 600 and above now i own and have bought many sony products many of which i still own and use how is it that a dvd player or vhs or tv can surpass the date of a product that is a couple of years old and a coincidence that the warranty is just 1 year on major electronics they should atleast be 3 or more and proof of sony's negligence as a company to issue a response to the promblem is whats hurting them if they would just owne up to the problem and repair like many people have said that 0.5% of systems that are getting it for free without charge it would not have a significant effect on their reputation and dont compare them to any other system as it does not hurt or help the issue so what if the xbox has more problem then their system it does not excuse their lack of service as a company sony should be ashamed.

I'd like to thank BBC for bringing this story out into the open and for confronting Sony about it. This is a real problem, not some made up story meant to promote Xbox sales. I live in Dallas and I purchased a PS3 three years ago for about $400. About a year ago I started getting the YLOD. I did some research on the web and found out I could fix it by heating the processors up. I followed the procedure carefully and was able to fix it but it only lasted for about a month before happening again. I repeated the process again this time with more heat but the same thing happened, it only lasted of a couple of days. I tried every combination of steps including cleaning every square inch of the unit and heating the various components at different temperatures and different lengths of time but the fix only holds for a couple of days or weeks. After doing this seven times I got tired of it and decided to fork out the money get it officially fixed. I called Sony and was greeted by a stuck-up receptionist that told me they can't fix the unit because I opened the unit. I told them that it's out of warranty so I would be paying for the repair but they still refused to repair it. This made me go ballistic. I told them that this is like a mechanic at a car dealership telling a person they can't fix their car because he already tried to fix it himself or took it to another mechanic. I told them that I was extremely unhappy with the quality of their product and service and would be unlikely to purchase any Sony products in the future which will result in thousands of dollars of loses throughout my lifetime not to mention all the people I would talk to. They still arrogantly refused to do anything to help me and told me to "Have a nice day" before they hang up on me. Incidentally I still have the original Xbox which I bought in 2002 and it still works like a champ. Same can be said about my Wii system. I heard that the Xbox 360 has similar problems so it's obvious that engineers are not making products that last any more. I think I'm going to resort back to wooden blocks. At least they last for more than a couple of years.

YOU CAN SAY WHAT YOU WANT ABOUT XBOX I LOVE THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE I HAD THE RED RING OF DEATH AND MICROSOFT FIXED MY XBOX FREE OF CHARGE AND GAVE ME A FREE MONTH OF XBOX LIVE SONY ON THE OTHER HAND WANTED TO CHARGE ME A WHOPPING 200 DOLLARS FOR THAT I CAN BUY A USED PS3 SO ANY HINTS TELLING ME HOW TO FIX MY SYSTEM MYSELF WILL HELP ME OUT A LOT BECAUSE I EVEN SENT MY SYSTEM TO A REPAIR SHOP AND IT WORKED FOR A COUPLE OF MONTHS THEN THE SAME THING AGAIN I HAVE A COUSIN WHOS ON HER 5TH YES 5TH PS3 SO THEIR FAILURE HAS TO BE HIGHER THE 0.5% AND IF I CANT FIX MY SYSTEM MYSELF ITS GOING IN THE TRASH

I have to post a supportive comment here for Microsoft.

When our XBOX360 died I just rang them and went through the routine of explaining what the problem was and they made arrangements for me to drop it at the post office in a box (specifically they told me not to use the box it came in) with the labels they sent me via e-mail.

Despite telling them exactly what was wrong with it and even disclosing that I am a techy and a mod here the person at the other end of the phone made me do every test on her sheet (she must have been drilled on the instructions) so I give them top marks for having a solid warranty process.

10 days later it returned to me via registered post.

Problem solved ...

I respect a company that fixes stuff no questions asked and my kids have bought heaps of games for it, and recently a Kinect.

The controllers are quality made and my machine has been hammered over the past 18 mths.

We have a PS2, Wi, and previously PS1 ... so I speak as a parent who has forked out heaps for games ... for the kids of course ... yes ... the kids.

Microsoft also made Freelancer ...

Microsoft also made a humanlike robot and called him Bill ... he once travelled around a lot entertaining us ... alas he retired. Hint hint Steve ...

I have had 5 ps3's.... 3 have failed with this. yes all old ps3 because I liked the idea of being able to use backwards compatibility to my 135 ps2 games. 3/5 due to this issue. I'm sure failure rate is higher in other countries. They probably only released the numbers of their country that had the least amount of failures. 1/5 had the blue ray problem, 1/5 stolen in break in. Worst part my latest ylod is day after buying gta5 and only couple months from ps4....
