Sony T-120 VHS tapes won't play

I have some Sony T-120 VHS tapes and when I try to play them I get a message "No Signal. Check connected device's power, cable connected device's power, cable connection, and source selection". Without changing anything I can get many other brands/types of tapes to play. What is causing this?

Do the Sony tapes play in another machine? These magnetic tapes are undoubtedly old, and they may not play at all, or be blank at this point.
