Hello, I bought a Sony Vaio model SVT131390X back around 2013 and the ssd recently failed on me. This time around I wanted to just use a regular hdd so I bought a wd black wd5000lplx to put inside, but when I went to install it the hard drive cannot fit into its slot. It seems to get blocked by some other part on the slot. Is there an adapter that I am missing for this to work? Thanks!

Solution

Not at all. Hardware vendors is been known to make things just different enough that force you to go back to them for service.

Am betting an HD in this spot needs a Sata adapter. You may have to order one for Sony. Try eBay. Bought this laptop new? saved all packaging? the adapter maybe sitting there and at the time you ignored it.

No there is no adapter you are missing for it to work. It sounds as, since the SSD fit but the HDD seems to be blocked, you probably got the wrong size of HDD as a SSD is thinner than most HDDs. Check your size again, looks like you need a (LxH) 2.5"x7mm drive.

I should probably specify, the previous ssd was mSATA and was in a different port. The thinness of the HDD isn't the issue, the HDD is blocked to the right of the port, not vertically blocked.

Also I removed the bracket and the same issue still exists.

The old drive was an mSATA SSD that was plugged in to a completely different spot at the opposite end of the MOBO. There has never been a drive in this slot. Here I have included 2 more pictures. One of my MSI laptop (has the copper heat pipe and light green in picture, as well as the 2.5 inch bay of the vaio(more silver colored). The ports on the two are totally different. My MSI works and can fit a hard drive in it no problem. The vaio does not have the same looking port, and also the drive will not connect to it. There is no wrong alignment on my part, there is no physical way to attach this HDD to the vaio's port as it is right now.

MSI with slot that works:

Sorry for making it difficult, I do appreciate the help!
