Sony vaio vgn-c240e reboots on shutdown

hello everyone,

I have been pulling my hair out, please help

This sony laptop just reboots after shut down, to the point where you can count it out 5-4-3-2-1 restart.

I have tried EVERTYING

every os, xp, vista, win 7, ubuntu ... shutting down reboots every time.

I have gone though all the sparce BIOS settings ...
pheonix r0080j4 from 12/06, no help

I can't find an updated bios for this machine to try.

I have disabled every piece of hardware one by one, no help

the only clue I have is if I do a:
shutdown /i from the command prompt, get the shutdown dialog box ...

it has restart selected as the default.
I have changed this to shutdown and it reverts back to restart every time.

I have also gone to the intel site and got the latest chipset drivers, still no help.

I am losing my mind.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

oh, I also checked all the "power" options and checked the registry settings and did a diagnostics on the hard drive.

sorry for the bump, but did you fix this? I've got the same problem, and have run out of ideas

there is an original chipset software dl available for the motherboard as well as several other components. I would try these and the viao care updates and see if I can get anywhere. If not post back and let us know if you changed anything

thank you for your idea ... I no longer have the laptop to try, hopefully it will help someone else with the same problem.
