Solved! Sound not playing from ASUS laptop

Hey folks - same s___, different day. I just purchased an ASUS K501J-RX05 laptop and thre is no sound from speakers. Headphones will work, or exterior speakers plugged into the jack, but it has never uttered a peep otherwsie. Nice machine, but a fundamental problem. The machine is running Vista. ASUS tech support so far has uttered nary a sound as well. Kind of frustrated. Suggestions?

Have you tried the basics, i.e. reloading the sound card drivers, etc...?

Check the control panel sound settings.
Check volume settings. Make sure nothing is muted.
Check your application.
