Speaker on monitor not working after update

I have an HP Wide screen monitor with built in speakers and ever since I downloaded a service pack update from Windows, the speakers have no sound. The computer says they are working, but no sound comes out. I've updated the drivers and Windows wants 99.00 to troubleshoot the problem.

Sounds like a driver problem but please always add info like the computer info, OS used and monitor model.

Ok thanks for the guidance. I have and HP pavilion running Vista home premium 64 bit OS. Monitor is w2558hc Wide LCD. The audio driver is from realtek. When I check the sound, the computer says the driver is up to date and the speakers are working properly. Nvidia downloaded an update the same day that windows downloaded the service pack. It was service pack 1 even though the computer says I am using service pack 2. I don't really know what any of this means, I'm just trying to give as much info as possible. Thanks for trying to help.
