In response to the last question in the news, it is because large traditional (non technology) companies do not want to advance in any way (especially in technologies).
If you work in one of these fields, you will know, there is still a large demand on people with I.T. knowledge dated back to 1960s!
The refusal to update and upgrade for such a long time have produced a lot of burden in changing anything in a short period of time which is costly. They are willing to pay large sum of money, comparatively small for upgrading to new and better technology, as long as there is company wanna to take on the support.
This, will really hinder the technology improvement but is the real world. Apple hates this but, Adobe would love it. You cannot improve a software's capability when it is truly mature and no other technology break through to make more money. And Adobe won't invest in them as well.
So, hope the Internet giants will drive the pace of development forward!
