Hello,
me and my wife recently purchased a home that had surround sound speakers built into the ceiling, but the previous owners took the previous receiver. I decided to purchase a receiver and get our surround sound up and running.. Upon hooking the speakers up to the box, when the box was on no sound at all would play, not even the regular television sound. When the box was off, the regular television sound would play just fine. When we had the box hooked up we had an hdmi cord plugged up in the hdmi 4 slot on the television, and the hdmi in the Sat/Catv hdmi slot, as well as trying all the other hdmi plug-ins in the back of box, GAME, CD/DVD, etc. We also tried using A/V cables to ensure that it wasn't just the hdmi cable itself. I am not experienced with surround sound systems at all, just seeking some ideas for what might have been the issue.
Thanks in advance,
Chad.

The easiest way to connect a a/v receiver is by connecting your tv to the HDMI out on the receiver. Everything else, blu-ray, gaming systems, etc. connect to the hdmi ins on the a/v receiver. The receiver is your hub, the tv is the output. Sound goes into the receiver, then the picture is output-ed (pretty sure this isn't a word, but whatever) onto the tv.

So if you want to watch tv, you would connect your tv receiver (Dish, Directv, Time Warner, etc) to one of the hdmi ins and set the a/v receiver to that HDMI.

So with your sony a/v receiver you would connect your tv receiver to the sat/cab hdmi.

For easier steps:

1. Connect a hdmi to the hdmi out on the sony receiver. Then connect this hdmi to a hdmi of your choice on the tv...
One way to connect your system is to connect all your sources to the receiver with HDMI.Connect the HDMI out of the receiver to the HDMI-ARC input on the TV. There will only be one HDMI labeled ARC. Turn ARC on in the TV menu. ARC is audio return channel. This will get sound from the tuner and smart apps of the TV into the receiver on the same cable that the video goes from the receiver to the TV.
Another way is to connect all your sources to the TV with HDMI. Connect the optical audio output of the TV to the receiver. You can connect the receiver to the TV with HDMI so you can use the onscreen display but will only need the optical connection for normal use. The optical out usually needs to be turned on. Check the TV manual.
Either way you need to set up the receiver as per the manual.
You will also need a self powered subwoofer to complete the system. It doesn't need to be Bose. It would connect with an interconnect cable to the subwoofer output of the receiver. You can use the system as a 5.0 but it really needs the sub to sound correct.

For easier steps:

2. Connect all devices to the hdmi ins. So blu-ray/dvd, game systems, tv receivers. If they don't have hdmi connections use digital optical or component cables.
3. The manual will show you how to set up the speakers. I'm not sure how well sony does this, but my Yamaha has a mic set up that is super easy.
4. Once set up is done, all you have to do is set the a/v receiver to the channel the device you want to use it connected to.

I've had a home theater for years, and here's my tips for the best experience.
Floor and wall speakers are better than ceiling speakers for the sound. Don't stick speakers in corners unless you have no choice
Wired speakers are better too
You need a quality sub-woofer
Speakers and sub woofer should be the same brand and from the same year for the best sound
HDMI is the best connection for your receiver. And not just any hdmi, you need the higher end brands if you can afford them. It makes all the difference
Use banana plugs for wires. It makes set up easier, moving speakers easier, and gives the best sound quality
For surround sound most receivers have movie settings
depending on the room speaks should be set as large for well, large rooms, and small for small rooms. This is in settings
Bose is just the most known speaker brand. It's not the best, and it can often be over priced. I prefer klipsch
You should have: one center speaker, one sub woofer, and depending on room size either two bookshelf speakers and two standing speakers, or four bookshelf speakers. You manual will show you where they go.

Here's what I recommend.
