Swapping battery guts?

I ordered my friend a new battery (from Amazon) for her Compaq CQ50 laptop. It says it's compatible with her model and seems to work pretty good, but it's not physically identical to the original battery and falls out really easy. I'm wondering if, despite the warning label, it's possible/safe to open up the battery and swap the guts. Or should I just return it and spend twice as much on a battery from HP?

Solution
If you just bought it and it's not right, RETURN IT ASAP, while you still can. They either sent you the wrong one or you didn't buy the right part number.
It can be pretty dangerous messing with batteries in general, not to mention a laptop battery. The materials used in a typical laptop battery are caustic and toxic. I'd recommend just spending the extra money and getting a battery that fits.

That's what I wound up doing. New one fits great.
