Hi all,

I was wondering whether anyone could tell me what the free space was
that I could use on the 8846. The website tells me there's a 32 and
64MB version. Assuming I get the 64MB version, how much free space do
I get ? (64MB - the operating system would be... ?).

thanks !

There's no firm answer on this... varies with the os version as well as
what's running as the ram is dynamically divided into os/program and
storage memory

With 2002 and no programs running, about 3.6 megs is used by the OS

Would you say then that without any programs running I would have an
available space of 64meg - 3.6megs = about 60megs of free disk space for my
apps ?

just wondering how much free space I can use on that device...

thanks

Life ain't like that ;-)

While you might be about to get close to that amount of apps installed,
there would be no room left for them to load and run... the 64 megs is
used for both storage, os and program runtime space.

If you are looking for a realistic maximum, plan on 32 megs which will
leave very little elbow space as those programs begin to generate data.

Also... why so focused on the internal memory?

It has a type II CF slot which is available for programs that don't need
an i/o card when in use... that moves you up into the multi gig range
for app storage.

This is exactly the problem that I'm facing.. it seems that with the PPT8846
I can either use a WiFi CF card or a CF card with extra memory - but not
both (seems like there's only one slot!).

The only option I have is to go for the PPT8046 which is a much larger
device :/

Can you maybe confirm that this is NOT the case ? This would make my life SO
much easier!

thanks!

With the Symbol, since it is a "hardened unit" the issue may be "getting
to the slot" but in most cases you do not need both storage and wifi at
the same time so swapping out the cards is trivial... the cards are "hot
swappable" and you will be notified if you extact the CF when an app or
file on it is open and unsaved.

All you have to do is to assure that the apps that will run with wifi
are installed in main memory and the others on a storage card and swap
accordingly.

Additionally, most of us put the apps that are used daily in main memory
and those that are not or are very large on a storage card.

Bottom line... don't let how you work on a pc dictate how you will work
with a ppc or you will be faced with the size issues you mentioned in
your message.

The thing is.. truck drivers are meant to be using the devices:p ... do you
see where I'm going ?

I have just made an order for a PPT8846 - I will let you know how it's
going. From what you have said I believe I should be ok:)

looks pretty interesting:) shame it's only 128megs but I guess it definitely
should be enough. Do you know if it fits in the PPT8846 ?
