Tape Deck > EQ > Amp

Setup is currently connected as follows -

Tape Deck Line Out > Amp Line In
EQ Line Out > Amp Play Tape 2
EQ Line In > Amp Rec Tape 2
Tape Monitor buttons depressed on Amp

This works OK, but I really only want the EQ affecting the Tape Deck and not the other components connected to the Amp.

The Tape Deck has the following connections available -

Line Out
Line In
Rec Out
Playback

and the following buttons on the front -

EQ on/off
Tape Monitor source tape
Rec Mode straight EQ


Any advice will be appreciated.

You should try to get model numbers on the parts.

A line level EQ could be stuck between the Tape deck line out and amps line in.

Pictures may help as well.

Tape Deck = Akai CS-M02
EQ = Technics SH-8025
PreAmp = Mitsubishi M-P04

A Generic solution offered was this -

Tape Deck Line Out > EQ Tape Mon
EQ Tape Out > Tape Deck Line In
EQ Input > Amp Rec Tape 2
EQ Output > Amp Play Tape 2

But the EQ doesn't have Tape Mon or Tape Out, it has Playback and Rec Out

Try the following.

Akai CS-M02 line out -> Technics SH-8025 Line In | Line out-> Mitsubishi M-P04 Aux or Tuner in if one is not in use output -> Amp -> Speakers.

I am guessing you use the preamp as your main selector? If not you can bypass it altogether in most cases. Just do NOT use Phono in for tapes/tuners/cds as they may distort because the Phono input may be too sensitive.

All your hardware has multiple places to get audio out for tape recording. This is because at one point you would want to record anything(other tapes/radio/records/ect) . You also have many selectors along the way(2 in the EQ byt the look of things and more in the preamp.).

The setup I list should allow you to have JUST the tape deck on the EQ and anything else on the preamp or amp it self should not be sent past the EQ.

Edit I got a better look at that preamp.

You can jump from the EQ -> Tape Play instead of AUX or Tuner without any issues. just make sure the EQ is between the tape deck and pre amp.

You may be able to find manuals for those devices on the net if you need as well.

But from what I can see in your setup.

Tape Deck
Line Out to feed amps or pre-amps.
Line In take a line level signal front another device for recording(the deck has level controls on the front so you can adjust if your input is too loud or quiet).

EQ
Line In to take in an audio source to have the EQ applied to it
Line Out to output this Equalized sound. You can also bypass the EQ with a switch on the front.
Tape REC out should allow you to record whatever is plugged into the EQ(should act almost as another line out)
Tape Playback seems to be a Line in for tape decks(or almost any line level device). You seem to have a source switch on the front to select what to use.

Pre amp. In your case it has some form of basic EQ(just bass/treble/loudness) and acts as a selector switch for an AMP.
Phono 1 and Phono 2 are for record players. they are line in's but may have more amplification as well as a filter to make records sound right. Only use these with record players. Some record players have a built in preamp and filter. so for those use Aux/Tuner or one of the tape inputs
Tuner is a line in for your AM/FM tuner. It is a line in and can be used with other devices.
Aux in is another line in that can be used with many devices like CD players and TV's/cable/satellite boxes.
Tape 1 and 2
Play is the line in
Rec is the line out to allow recording of what in currently selected on the preamp. You have switches on the front to control what deck will record.
Output feeds your power amplifier.
