so my friend uploaded a video to youtube and he has no subscribers this was his first video. Every time he refreshed the page the view count went up by one and it got to 100 views. Are these real views?

Yes they are real views. And your friend has viewed the video 100 times. I think once you enable monetization it resets to the real number.
