TiVo keyword search, "and" or "or"?

If one sets up a Wishlist on TiVo for certain keywords, e.g.. "black
white", does TiVo select the show on the basis of "black and white" or
"black or white"?

The search returns results that match all of the keywords you
provide.

It's 'OR'.

Keyword: TOM JONES = Match if TOM is found in show title, episode title,
director, actor, guest star, or if JONES is found.

Keyword: "TOM JONES" (using the Pause button to enter double-quotes)
= match exact phrase.

Joe, I've got an autorecord keyword wishlist for the words-queer
eye jim-(friend of the wife's is on the show) and I do not have
any queer eye episodes showing up that do not have the name jim
in the description. If your case were true, then every episode of
Queer Eye would have been recorded, because 2 of 3 keywords
matched my request, but that is not the case.

The keyword wishlist only tags those shows that match all of the
keywords that you provide.

From http://customersupport.tivo.com/knowbase/root/public/tv1528.htm

...If you enter more than one keyword, the WishList search will only
find programs that match all of your keywords...

...the keywords PAUL SIMON might find information about both a person
named Paul Simon and a documentary about Simon Bolivar whose director
was named Paul...

In other words, in response to the OP's question, the default is a
logical *AND*, but order or placement is not considered. If order or
placement is important than enclose the exact words or phrase in quotes.
This is typical and logical for search engines.

Thanks for posting that; I had mis-remembered.

The first quote from the customersupport.tivo.com site should have been written...
"... will find programs that match ANY ONE of your keywords..."

While contemplating the issue, realize that WL keywords "PAUL SIMON" and PAUL SIMON
are not the same. The first will find programs that have PAUL SIMON in the description
while the second finds programs with PAUL or SIMON in the description.

Double quotes force words to be searched as a single search string.
It's documented in the TiVo User's Guide.

However, that second example will not return results that only
have PAUL in them. It *must* have both PAUL and SIMON. That the 2
keywords can be spread between the title and description is a
feature. Example: a documentary special regarding Paul Simon
could either be titled "Paul Simon:The Man behind the image" or
it could just be "The man behind the image" with Paul Simon in
the description. Or it could come up with some off-target serial
show that, in the description, says "Paul discovers Simon's dark
secret, while Melissa overhears Jamie's confession about the
party last weekend". This last is important for a time when you
might only know a character's name, and want to check out the
show in more detail.

No, that's not correct. What you say is in contradiction to both what the
web says and what my TiVo manual says. My manual clearly says exactly the
following:
You can create a Keyword WishList with one keyword or with several.
If you enter more than one keyword, the WishList only finds programs
that match all [ed. all is even in italics] of your keywords. The
TiVo Service checks for your keywords in the program's title,
decription, actor, director, year and category iformation.

It is clearly an AND that it is using and not an OR. So, the first quote
from the web is in fact correct (not surprising).

That should be PAUL and SIMON and not just in the description, according
to my manual.

That much is true.
