Toshiba laptop boot-up failure

I was given a Toshiba Tecra 8000 P-II. After I turn it on, it gives me
a message that I have to insert the system disk. I can not bring up to
the DOS setup screen by pressing F8.

Can I assume that the laptop, as the initial step at least, needs to
have the OS reinstalled?

Also, if so, would it be capable of running XP Home? I think it's CPU
speed is approx. 2-300 mHz.

Thanks,
Njord

Njord:

First get into the BIOS setup by pressing the ESC key just after the TOSHIBA
splash screen. It will tell you to press F1. Do that and you are into the
BIOS. Use your arrow keys to get over to the boot sequence. If you have XP
Home it should come on CD, so use the space bar to scroll through the
options that give you CD-ROM as the first boot device. Insert the XP disk
into the CD, then press the End key and Y to save the setting. Then let the
CD boot.

I have sucessfully installed Windows 2000 pro on my 8000. I do recommend
you max out the RAM though.

This sounds very likely. I think the actual massage refers to 'a system
disk' rather than 'the system disk'.

Hmm. I think XP would be tricky as it is not likely to be fitted with a
huge amount of RAM. Windows 98 SE (or at a pinch Windows ME) might be a
better way to go.
