Toshiba laptop keeps asking for a password to get into running mode. Don't know it!!!!

Please help! My Toshiba Satellite won't let me into the computer to actually RUN. It keeps asking me for a password and I've never had one. What can I do?? I need to retrieve some data on that laptop. Thanks, Diane
