Trying to change vinyl to digital

Need help changing vinyl to digital?
I've got a technics(SL-B270) turntable, no pre-amp. Pioneer reciever (SX-5), and a Toshiba (satillite C55-B5302) laptop.Years ago I was able to do this fine with a desktop by plugging into the sound card. Anyway, I plug RCA cord from turntable to receiver's phono. From reciever's tape out RCA cord to Toshiba's mic/headphone port with 3.5mm. Downloaded Audacity on laptop. No sound? Help...I feel problem is with Toshiba's mic/headphone port. Would an RCA cord with USB help?

I think you may have posted this in the wrong forum - Tom's is usually more computer centred and often not so musically focussed. I would recommend a more musical forum if you want more experts around.

Anyway, my (admittedly limited) understanding is that you should be able to work it like you said in most DAWS. In something like fruityloops (aka FL Studio) you could just point it at an external instrument.
