Tweaking LD players

I remember people used to tweak sony playstations by adjusting a
certain knob on the inside called a 'pot', which supposedly made the
laser's strength higher, making it easier to read scratched/bootlegged
discs. Can LD players be tweaked in similar fashion? Also, you know
how some LD players have small clamps to accomadate both CDs and LDs?
Can those clamps be easily removed and replaced with a larger clamp?

Yes; inside you can change the strength of the higher end players but that
only increases the dynamic range of the signal then your monitor has an AGC
circuit to limit the max anyway. This is not a tweak to get a better LD
picture.

You can put a S9 LD only hub into a 704/99 but each time the player start
the pickup will move in and hit the hub and possibly not work. The players
with LD hubs only have code in the chip to NOT move in closer to look for a
CD present.

Have you ever tried switching around parts from different players like that?

No I have not. There are proms on different boards that have code that
interact with another. You cannot easily swap a part. If you don't need
dual sided playback and don't mind how it takes a while to start playing an
LD while it builds a chapter index the industrial LD-V8000 is a very nice LD
only machine you can get under $100.
