I have been using my digital camera (Fuji 4900Z) for a year mainly in the
automatic mode and now want to start using it in other modes and have been
trying to learn by reading the messages in this news group. I have learnt
but still have a poor general understanding. Could some one recommend a book
which would help me

There are quite a number of tutorials on the web for free. If you search
www.dpreview.com you'll find some.

HP Books in the 80's used to publish a series of 8x10 softbound books
on individual brands of cameras. For example, I have in my library a
book on the 'How to Select and Use Olympus SLR Cameras' by Carl
Shipman. While the books go into detail on use of several models, they
are superb for their information on exposure controls and their
effects, exposure metering, viewing and focusing, how to use flash,
getting acquainted with lenses, and a variety of 'specialty' things
like close up and macro. You can probably find some of these books at
garage sales or flea markets at bargain prices!

Bryan Peterson's _Understanding Exposure_ is excellent. It teaches you
the relationship between aperture, shutter speed and ISO with lots of
practical examples.

Thanks but I am in UK and this site is the American Amazon site.
I tried to find it in the British site but no joy so I tried Google but
again got the American site.
I 've always avoided buying from American sites but perhaps I am wrong!
Do you think I should?

Time-Life books published a whole series on photography, a number of
volumes. One was on photography in general, one specifically on
cameras, other volumes on special aspects of photography. These were
quite popular, and many libraries have them.

Also, look or search "Focal Press", one of the big names in photo book
publishers. Many good titles.
