Unusual issue: Re-install of optical drive screws up windows 7

Mar 18, 2013
Hey guys,

My brother in law came to me with an issue he recently encountered and I'm at a loss. He has a samsung laptop (specs will be below) which was having some issues with its optical drive apparently. Wouldn't read anything. So he read something that said if he pulled it out of the laptop, booted the computer without, then shut it off and put it back in, that might fix the problem.

So he did all of that, and now...the optical drive still does not work, and Windows 7 is now not working properly. It's stuck on the Windows Basic look, previously pinned programs on the start menu are gone, network connections are disabled. office programs are not working, and it says the Microsoft Diagnostic Service is not working.

What this seemed like to me was that it for some reason booted in Safe mode. When I looked at it some time ago, though, it didn't necessarily appear to be in safe mode, nor could I boot it out of safe mode (if it was in safe mode in the first place). Any ideas?

Reinstall graphics card drivers, if that doesn't work reinstall Windows. I suppose it's possible that he damaged the laptop when he removed the optical drive but rule out software first.

Please do try these troubleshooting steps that may help.
- First is to try running System Restore, if it's in Safe Mode, System Restore will still work with not problem.
- Here's how to run System Restore: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-ph/windows7/restore-system-files-and-settings
- If System Restore will not work, try to manual set it not to load in Safe Mode.
- Press the Windows key + R at the same time then type in msconfig to the Run box that will open then press OK.
- Once System Configuration is open click on Boot Tab.
- Under Boot Options, remove the check on Safe Boot then click Apply and OK then reboot the laptop.
- It should load into the normal mode again not in Safe Mode.

Hopefully this steps will help. :)
