Upgrading Satellite L100-108 (CPU, RAM)

Hello, everyone.

After the end of support for Windows XP and the last Firefox update, I've been thinking seriously in updating my laptop to be able to run a more modern OS (Windows 7). I know that Linux would be a good solution, but I work as a independent computer technician so it is important for me to keep this system (XP) in which I can run old toolchains and program Delphi 7 for a few clients for which I do code maintenance until they update themselves. Also, the economy it s not good enought to spend in a new PC with no assured returns, since they MAY not call my services, and money is tight. Sorry about the rant.

I've an ancient Toshiba satelite L100-108. The exact model is PSLA0E-00E008SP. CPU-Z tells me the processor is a Intel T1300 (a 1.66GHz Core Solo, 667MHz FSB), revision C0, in a Socket 479mPGA. Sandra concurs (FC-mPGA479M) and call it a Socket M. Yet Socket M should be mPGA478MT, amd mPGA479 is BGA479 socket.
Following the Wikipedia page for Intel Core processos, it is suposed to be a LE80538GF0282M, a Yonah core with a 27 watts power draw.
The chipset is i945GM Express, and it does have the last toshiba BIOS (3.0).

* So, 1st question: CPU-Z says that my processor is a Socket 479. But the i945GM Express is named in the wiki as a Socket M only chipset. What socket do I really have? Is there a way to get the exact model number of the processor without dismantling the laptop? Does the package field of CPU-Z means the physical socket or the CPU bus? Since the Core Solo and Core Duo are on both sockets but do have different upgrade paths I really need to know first.

I've upgraded it previously years ago, replacing its 2x512MB DDR2 RAM modules for 2x1GB, and its 60GB 2'5 SATA HD first for a 160GB one and later 250GB. Still, following last updates, the system is going slugish again (Firefox 29 had grown its memory requeriments in 1/3~1/2 from previous version), yet I'm not sure upgrading the memory again (up to 3GB) will work. Toshiba says in the page that it does support up to 4GB of RAM, but 've read that people have tried with the same or similar chipsets, and it causes the system to reboot if more than 2304MB (2GB+256MB) are plugged in.

* 2nd question: Would the memory upgrade WORK? It does not need to be to 4GB, since using a pure 32bit processor, it would never use them.

CPU-Z also tells me that the memory is working at 333MHz, due to one of the modules being 333MHz and the other 400MHz.

* 3rd question: Upgrading the slower RAM module to a faster one would gain some performace? Would it be worth the expense?

Checking in EBay europe, I've seen an Intel Core Duo T2300 Processor with a 479mPGA socket going for 55$ (10$ the processor, 45$ international mailig costs). It will not be faster, but it will be a dual core. The thing it is that the model does have a draw of 31 watts. Being the same core (Yonah), I'm sure the chipset.will support it, but I do not know if the BIOS will. The highest dual core model I've found it is the L100-120 with a T2400 which, in 479mPGA socket, does also have a 27 watts power draw. On the other side, Socket M do allow up to 31 watts, so for the same money I can also get from Hong Kong a T2600.
Yet there are Core 2 Duo T5500 with the same socket and FSB speed, even cheaper.

* 4th question: Could the system (chipset, BIOS) support a Core 2 Duo?

Thanks for any help with my questions

Windows NT 6 drivers works in Vista, 7 and 8. In fact, Windows 7 for the chipset and trackpad are included in Windows 7 itself. Even then, I will not upgrade Windows now. I'm interested in upgrading the hardware (CPU). If it is unfeasible or too expensive I'll have to look for a second hand laptop or go Linux. The idea was to give it at least another year of aceptable use without having to do a reinstallation, as I explained in the first paragraph.

I'm asking because the information I have found is contradictory. Some programs identify the CPU as one or another socket. Does someone a way to know for sure the exact model without having to dismantle the computer? If not, a good tutorial of how to open the case would help lots.

Thanks for any help you can spare.
