Using Y splitter, can get sound OR mic to work, not both

I'm using a V-MODA mic with a pair of Philips SHP9500 headphones. I've been using this set up for a little over a year without issue. Yesterday, my microphone stopped receiving. I did some testing and both the headset and mic work without the splitter. So obviously I figured the Y adapter was the issue. This morning I ran to Radioshack and picked up a new adapter but I'm having the same issue.

The green plug on the adapter will work if plugged in for the headphones or the microphone. The pink plug on the adapter doesn't work for either port. I'm pretty sure I got the right adapter: Dual 3.5mm male to 3.5mm stereo female.

Any help or insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

note: on the box and in the store it wasn't noted that this was a "mobile" headset adapter. could this be the issue?

It looks like a splitter, but it is NOT a Y splitter.

It is a 4 pole to dual 3 pole adapter.
Often just called 4 pole to 3 pole.

Look closely, the Mic/Headphone combo plug has 4 poles (4 sections of metal separated by 3 plastic bands)
If you look at a 3 pole you can see it only has 2 of those plastic bands.

So a Y splitter just doubles up a 3 pole.
A 4 pole to three pole creates two separate 3 pole connections - one of the mic, and one for the speakers.

Yes. The second one from startech does a poor job of describing the thing, but i think it is, they just called them "pins" for some reason.

That top one is for sure correct, and is even labeled accordingly.
