Verizon Sleaziness

In trying to cancel my Verizon cell phone, that I have had
for over two years now, their representative Jerron told me
I will be charged $175.00 early termination fee. I balked at
that, since I have long since gone past any such date.

He advised me that I had 'updated' my phone to receive
extra minutes in April of this year, therefore the early termination
fee applies. This is a complete fabrication, since I made no
such change with Verizon. He further claimed I had signed such
a contract and acknowledged verification sent to me via e-mail.
Again, totally false. He promised he would check into it, and
someone would call me back. That did not happen.

I sent several e-mails to Verizon, each time getting an acknowledgment
that my messages were received, and each time being promised a
response. That also did not happen.

I then spent a long time trying to contact Verizon customer service on
the telephone, finally reaching a "Tamika" at the Columbia, SC call
center. She said her records indicated I made the upgrade at a Circuit
City store in Maryland. Since I have not been in Maryland for over two
years, I knew this was also a fabrication. She promised to get with
her supervisor on the matter and call me back in two hours. That, of
course, did not happen either. I left voice mail messages for her,
again after delays on their ridiculous machine-answered call centers,
and have not yet had the courtesy of a call back.

I am wondering if any others have experience such sleaziness from
Verizon, and what I can do to get them to behave like honorable human
beings.

Yes, if you accept a promotional offer it will start a new contract or
extend your existing one. If you did not SPECIFICALLY agree to any
promotions I would dispute it in writing with Verizon. Force them to provide
proof of what you agreed to.

Also, you might want to talk to a retail store manager and see if maybe they
can help you... I don't know for sure that they'll be able to, but it's
worth a try and you would be dealing with someone local, in person. But make
sure you do EVERYTHING in writing...

Been there, done that (in my case, they violated their own policy on
callbacks for customers opening trouble tickets).

This is a legal matter -- an issue of contract law -- which is why I
suggested doing everything in writing (use registered mail with return
receipt so you know when they got the mail). If both sides didn't agree to
the contract - and in this case, the things they said you did, which would
have obligated you to a new contract - weren't things you actually did -- if
both sides don't agree to the contract, then by law the contract is not valid.

Start by taking my advice. Hopefully you won't have to get a lawyer involved.

Larry, if you're going to quote me, don't twist my words, k?

My post specifically mentioned NOT getting an attorney involved. Sometimes
it has to be done. But I don't see the point of spending money up front if
you don't need to, and sometimes you can get big companies to listen without
throwing lawyers at them.

Have you considered the possibility that you could
be a victim of identity theft? Someone claiming to
be you with your information did this?

Although possible, I think the probability low that a
a company as large as VZW is intentionally falsifying
records to screw you out of $175...

Well, you have one more option, equally "sleazy." If you happen to
work/live in a place that has extended coverage, bad extended coverage, (for
example) then a good CS may let you out of your contract early.

Concerning the "proof", sadly, VZW occasionally passes the burden of proving
that you don't have a contract on YOU. I'm surprised, because you seem to
have a compelling argument. If they can not "show you" proof; a simple
call/letter to the FCC with your version will produce swift action.

Most CS's are actually pretty good. Your story even made me feel bad. dr.

The only one I could find had a sign out front that said
"Atornie at law"... I guess you get what you pay for.

I appreciate the responses. Looks like mine is an isolated case,
annoying though the experience has been. Poor customer service,
in any case. Not returning my calls & e-mails, I mean.

Possibly an overzealous employee in the Maryland Circuit City store is
the culprit? Still, due to my difficulties, I will not be tempted to
deal with Verizon in the future, at least not unless I become even
more dissatisfied with the other providers. I now have a Nextel, with
a walkie-talkie feature, and the reception (thus far) seems a lot
better than the Verizon, so I may already be better off.

Thanks again for the notes!

Looks like this is gonna be a nightmare that just won't go away. When
I got an invoice for some $175.00 today because of the claimed 'early
termination', I called them again. They have now changed their story,
saying that I did the upgrade via the telephone, and that is why they
have no supporting documents. They say I had to have given them my
security code to do so, therefore their system is 'safe' and I must
pay the charge.

Needless to say, I will continue to fight this sleazy business, but
others should take note. Verizon is like the Hotel California - they
won't let you check out! Not without a penalty, that is.

Just utterly infuriating, I must confess.

Having a penalty.....and COLLECTING a penalty.....are two different
subjects....unless they have access to your bank account....which they
don't....do they?
