VGA support

Hi All!

Sorry for a stupid question, but i'm new to PDA.

I'm going to buy Axim X50, which technically supports VGA.
But it's shipped with Windows Mobile 2003 second edition which does not
support VGA!

Questions:

1. Is it worth to buy such expencive device right now? I can buy X30 much
cheaper.
2. Is it possible to upgrade in the future?
3. If so, then when it will be available?
4. Do i really will be able to see whole page on the screen in VGA mode? Is
that readable?

Thanks beforehand!

WM2003SE does indeed support VGA and other resolutions as well. It is also
important that your hardware be capable of supporting the higher, or
different resolution. The Dell X50v, does have a 480x640 screen resolution.
(the X50's, no 'v', do not) The information displayed by default is not
substantially different than what QVGA viewers see. It is however
significantly clearer since they are able to use four times as many pixels
to display it. It also allows more flexibility in text rendering, because of
the increase in pixels, letting smaller and larger text be smoother.

There are third party hacks/apps that let you present information in true
VGA at the expense of everything being 1/2 (or 1/4) as big. The icons are
1/4 the size, the scroll bars are half as wide, etc. A spreadsheet has twice
as many rows and columns because they are half as high and half as wide.
Some folks like that, I personally don't wish to carry a magnifying glass.

There seem to be tweaks that help in the small scroll and menu bar issues,
but I haven't been too successful myself.

This applies to all the VGA screened PPCs that run WM2003SE.

Hi Sven!

You say amount of text lines will be the same but text will be more
accurate?

Actually i do not need a lot of features.

The question is - do i need to spend additional 1-2-3... hundred bucks for
such feature like VGA?
What i need is:
1. Ability to read *.doc, *.html, *.pdf, *.chm, *.txt
2. Have enough space to install dictionary, translator
3. Listen mp3
4. May be use skype. Not sure yet.

X50v is kinda expensive now. And the only significant difference from X30
for me will be resolution.
The problem is i dont know how it will look in reality. What is the
difference between QVGA and VGA?
Any comparison pictures?

I have no idea if it worth to invest in the future right now.

Not more accurate..crisper, cleaner, sharper, those sorts of words. Don't
know where you are but in the US on Dell's site the X50v is $449
X50 mid $359
X30 Hi $314
X30 Mid $279
X50 Low $269
X30 Low $199

Any of those models will do all you want with the exception of Skype. You
will want WiFi to do that, so you can throw out the X30 and X50 Low. You can
install apps for any of those things you listed on either the SD or on the
CF card, and the files as well. Is the VGA of the X50v worth the $90 more
over the next option down? Tough call. For the most part, those that have
VGA love it and wouldn't go back. I'm not as excited about it. I have an X30
Mid and an X50v and while I can see the difference, I'm not sure the price
is worth it. You can certainly put more text on the screen on the X50v, but
whether you can still read it is an individual thing. Since it looks like
you plan to do a lot of reading, note that the X30 does have a rocker on the
side to scroll up and down. The X50 has two buttons that could be programmed
for that, but they aren't as convenient IMHO.

I'm not sure that buying any PPC should be considered an investment in the
future. Best get what meets your needs and you can afford now. Folks who
bought in to Compaq's sleeve concept found their future cast aside. I'm not
sure that Dell's investment in a special VGA chip set is going to be
supported on a wide scale.

If money were really an issue, I'd probably be looking at the top two X30's.
You save a little to be able to buy a big flash card, and won't be so bummed
when the next new line comes out, because you didn't spend all that much on
your now old PPC ;)

I'm no Pocket PC expert but I'm sure 2003 SE does support 640x480.

Since that's the OS that ships with the X50v (this *is* this model you have,
right?), then it stands to reason that VGA is supported.

The situation is even more complicated, because i'm going to gift it to my
wife.
I don't know her reading abilities :-( I mean eyes of cource

I'm a programmer, but never used such stuff like PDA, so i'm kinda outdated
with terms and what is good or bad now.

Why i can't use Skype?

Skype is a wideband Voice over IP system. It works fine over a WiFi link,
but doesn't work worth a darn over low bandwidth such as BT or GPRS. If it
is important to use Skype, you need to have WiFi. You also need to have
access to WiFi HotSpots. If you are in Seattle and want to pay the $20 a
month to T-Mobile to use the HotSpot found in every Starbucks, OK, Skype
might be a good thing. Many places though, you may have trouble finding a
HotSpot.

For your wife huh? You sure she wants one, would use one?

Hi Sven!

Sorry for stupid questions.
I have several hot spots around.
I thought that will give me free access to the net. You say i have to pay.
Is that correct?

My wife definitly wants something to be able to read eBooks on the way.
I thought i can find something for this matter only, but seems like big
publishing companies killed all simple ebook readers. No such devices in
production now. Only can find used on ebay.

Then i started to search PDA market. My wish list was expanded at that
moment.
I've imagined that if she wants to read books, then she probably want some
translation and dictionary features (we are russian). After short research
i've found that PalmOS is probably half dead.
And i started to look on PPC side. As far as major concern was text
readability i've ended with X50v. That is the story.

But I still do not feel comfortable with that decision, mainly because of
money.
I can't imagine myself using PDA right now, so i have no idea what i need.
But if you have decent device, then you probably can find how to use it. I
expect to have in use for several years, so it might be good idea to have
some room for future OS upgrades. Isn't it.

I afraid to be boring, but it will help a lot if you can put some
screenshots from your x50.
Same text with different font size, startting from smalest you can read and
until you fill comfortable.
Is that doable?

You're Russian? Are you in Russia? I wouldn't have a clue as to the free
WiFi hotspot situation there. Here (US) there are free and pay and it
matters a great deal where you live. In my town there are dozens of pay
sites, Starbucks, Hotels, etc, but few free ones. Other places nearly the
whole town is blanketed with free WiFi.

As for screen shots. I'd recommend just going to google and checking the
reviews. Many have screen comparisons. I have never been very good at taking
pictures of PPC screens, and I don't think screen captures really give you a
good comparison. You must understand that my wife and I are at reading
glasses stage in our lives, so what may be hard for us may be perfectly
acceptable to you and your wife's eyes.

When it comes down to it, $314 (X30Hi) to $449(X50v) is a big difference,
and if the major requirement is e-books there is nothing wrong with the $279
X30Mid. Mine works just fine. I see the X30 struggle more with video
playback with it's 312Mhz processor, but it also is easier on the batteries.
I can tell you the X30Mid does Skype just fine, regardless of their 400Mhz
requirement. It even has a BT Headset profile so you could use a BT headset
with it. It has a healthy Built-In-Storage area, so you can load e-book
readers in user ROM, and store all your books on flash cards. $170
($449-$279) will buy a lot of reader programs and flash cards. WM2003SE on
the X30 will do landscape and portrait, and while the device is a box, it
stands up very nicely in either orientation, which has advantages over the
nicely rounded form of the X50 in some situations.

Whatever you get, it is not going to be obsolete and unusable when the next
model comes out, and I wouldn't hold my breath on any of them being
upgraded. Assume you get what you get, and if it works for you, it will
continue to work for you, for many years actually. There are always posts
from folks just now giving up their Jornada 548s after 4-5 years of use.

You *may* have to pay. But it could be just the cost of an overpriced
coffee in the case of starbucks. Some pubs near me have wifi
installed, so you can have a pint, read their newspaper *and* surf the
web, quite groovy.

Some hotspots are open intentionally or by accident. I'd consider it
not too bad to use those for free, as a PDA user you're hardly likely
to be downloading movies over several days and tying up their
bandwidth - the odd email and avantgo sync, maybe the bbc news or
whatever. So if it's in range and not locked, IMHO it's probably ok.

>My wife definitly wants something to be able to read eBooks on the way.

I've got hundreds of ebooks on my SD card. Mostly though they're old
novels, over 50 years and the publishers have relinquished copyright
on the works. You won't find many new ebooks without paying for them,
and I was always of the mind I'd rather have a real book in that case
;-)

>I can't imagine myself using PDA right now, so i have no idea what i need.

Maybe you can also consider "audio books" which are often available
for blind people on tape or CD. Copy them to the device. Good to
listen on-the-go while keeping your hands free to do other work.

Cheers - Neil
