Video card died when I plugged in speakers

I recently plugged in a different set of speakers to the proper audio port on my desktop PC and it instantly killed my video card. What the heck? The new speakers did not work either. I plugged the old speakers back in and they work fine. The video card is a Zotac GTX 560 Ti and has been working beautifully on my Photoshop machine for 2 years until now. Any ideas what may have caused this? I have trashed the speakers and ordered a new AMD R9 270X video card (I am using the built-in video for now - UGH). I have been building, upgrading and repairing PC's since the original 8088 IBM XP computers and am no slouch, but this baffles me. It doesn't seem possible. Could it just be a ridiculous coincidence? I am a little concerned about plugging in a new video card if some random event like plugging in speakers could kill it and waste another $150. Any help and advice would be appreciated.
