Video Quality Levels

Does anyone know how to map Tivo recording quality settings to the DVD
burning quality levels supported by Roxio Easy Media Creator 7? I have
sucessfully used graphedit to create a DRM-free mpeg file. Now I want
to record the maximum number of one hour shows on DVD while maintaining
the video quality level of the original mpeg files. There is no point
to burning the DVD at a higher quality level than the mpeg file
contains, but I also don't want to record the DVD at too low a quality
level.

Thanks!

Depends on what box you have. The general answer is to hack your box,
install TivoWeb, and then change the bitrate and resolution resources. But
since you imply you have a Series 2 or 2.5, the first step may or may not be
difficult to acheive. You'll need to research that based on your model.

Once that's done, then you want to shoot for something like 720 x 480 with a
decent bitrate. I don't have the links that I looked at handy, but you can
google tivo resolution DVD bitrate tivoweb resource or any combination
thereof.

I don't understand why I need to hack the box. I can already use
Tivo2Go to retrieve shows to my computer, and GraphEdit works fine (as
far as I can tell) to remove the DRM. That leaves me with a mpeg file
that I can burn to DVD. I'm just wondering if anyone has already
figured out how the Tivo recording video quality settings map to Roxio
DVD burning settings.

Thanks,

If the files are already MPEG and you can view them on your PC, then the
only thing left to do is to convert the files to DVD MPEG-2 format. This
should be a 1:1 conversion, with no settings needed for quality. I don't
have the Roxio product, so I can't tell you how to do it. There are many
tools on http://www.videohelp.com/.

Okay, maybe that's a different question - I thought what you wanted to do
was have the Tivo record at DVD-compatible resolution, so that you could
avoid transcoding. I'm still not sure exactly what you're getting at, but
then I use Nero for burning. In general I think that for a compatible DVD,
the original file, no matter what the resolution, is going to be transcoded
to 720 x 480 (or maybe 704 x 480 plus some lines for non-image data). If
you want to create SVCDs, they're going to be upconverted to 480 x 480,
although I think that might be one of the standard Tivo resolutions, so no
conversion would be necessary; the links I pointed you to will have info on
that.

Since you're going to need a standard resolution, either from the original
recording or via transcoding, I think what's going to determine how many
shows you can fit on a DVD is actually the bitrate; again, the link I
pointed to and/or a Google search should turn up Tivo's default bitrates. I
believe, but I'm not sure, that there's a minimum bitrate for
DVD-compatibility.

One additional point: it may be possible with some software, and I'm not
sure if Easy Media Creator is one of them, to burn DVD's at non-compliant
(i.e., less than 720 x 480) resolution; however, it would be hit or miss as
to whether these DVD's would play on a particular DVD player. If you just
wanted to get something off your Tivo to watch it once or twice in the near
future, and your DVD player could handle these discs, then that would be
fine, but obviously it's not a good solution for long-term archiving.
