Hello, I'd like to have a larger monitor for use with my laptop and wonder if I can just plug it in the external port and hook it up somehow to the existing monitor? Will the laptop need a certain amount of processor and memory or just enough resolution for the new monitors size? It's an old hp nx9600; pentium 4, 3.2ghz, 2 gb ram, and 64mb video with max resolution at 1680x1050. Would be using it for general web browsing, text reading, and movie watching, no gaming. Thank you.

You should be fine. The monitor will work no matter what resolution it is at. It may look a little crappy with lower than the monitor resolution however your laptop should support 1920x1080 out of the vga port.
