what does it mean when a color is neutral to its background for lcd settings?

I'm in the process of calibrating my MacAir monitor. One slider I'm asked to make the centre object the same colour. The other slider I'm asked to make the centre object neutral to the background. Isn't that essentially the same thing?

both could be used to describe matching the center object to the background color, yes.

or perhaps if its the same color it could be adjusting saturation not hue or one of the other various color values http/www.colorsontheweb.com/colorterms.asp
