What items are needed to run cable TV without DVR?

I recently ended up with a new Alienware gaming box with I3, 4gb GTX 745, 6GB RAM, 1TB hdd... and I was thinking of using it to replace my FIOS DVR so I can save the $20 a month DVR rental fee.

Looking at specs, it seems the box is sufficient to the task, however I have not been able to find out what else I need. I see mention of tv tuner cards, cable cards, digital adapters, etc. Do I need all that? There is no room in the gaming box for a tv tuner card, do they have external ones? I asked my tv provider and they said they rent the cable cards for $4 a month, but where do I put the card? What software do I need so I can schedule recording tv shows, and change channels, etc?

I am happy with my current tv service, I just figured I'd save some money each month by getting rid of their DVR. Is it going to be a pain to set this all up, or is it fairly straight forward? I have built boxes in the past so I am no stranger to connecting stuff to my netowrk and installing software.

I don't think I have ever seen an external -- USB3?? -- version.
