What's this? REAL HD on TNT?

They've been playing some real HD on TNT for about a month now, but I've
noticed that some of their shows are "stretched, fake HD".

Am I the only one that noticed this?

Shows can be HD conventional aspect ratio, HD wide, SD conventional aspect
ratio, SD stretched and SD conventional aspect ratio. I don't care for their
stretched approach at all.

Richard.

Same here. That SD stretched thing looks really cheap! I would rather
watch an SD broadcast on 4:3 than 16:9 that makes everything and
everyone on the screen look abnormal.

I don't think that is the case, Richard. All true HD is 16x9 format I
believe. Some programming is upconverted to 720 and may or may not be 16x9
or 4x3, but it is ED by definition. Correct me if I'm wrong.... :)

TNT has mixed "real" HD with stretched SD for a long time. Neither is new
for them.

When they run "Law and Order", for example, if it is on old SD episode,
they stretch it. If it is a newer HD episode, then it runs in excellent,
true HD.

When TNT does run HD, it is good quality video and audio.

You're right Glenn. If it's HD (upconverted or not) it MUST be
broadcast in 16:9. Now it can be a 4:3 picture with side bars, but it
must fill a 16:9 screen. But no, it is HD by definition, even if it is
an upconvert. It's just that the SOURCE material wasn't originally HD.

No, Hidef according to the spec is minimum resolution of 1280x720.

| No, Hidef according to the spec is minimum resolution of 1280x720.

Then don't label it "hidef" if you don't want to. Aspect ratio is just one
of several parameters available in transmitting video. Perhaps the real
issue is whether there is a way in a given transmission system to actually
indicate "this is <some set of parameters>" for the parameters you choose,
and get it recognized at all reeceiving ends. If you choose aspect ratio
4:3, lines 720, pixels per line 1080, frames per second 24, pixel structure
4:2:2, would it be recognized?

Where we call it "hidef" is a fairly arbitrary decision.

|
| No, it is not. It is an ATSC standard. Any resolution lower than 1280x720 is
| EDTV or SDTV.

You have not disproven my statement. You have merely identified who
made the arbitrary decision.

You sound like that is a bad thing.

The fact that HD is 720 or 1080 lines makes sense, the only other
alternative (under the ATSC set of 18 standard formats) is 480. If someone
tries to tell you 480 is HD then he is wrong. So out of the three, the two
that are actually _Higher_ than 480 are the two that are called High Def.
Sounds obvious to me, but if you want to call it arbitrary.....
