Solved! Will an audio extension cable prevent sound coming from built in speakers?

Feb 20, 2017

I have a monitor with built in speakers that is my secondary PC monitor and also the monitor I use for Xbox. I'm going to want to regularly switch between using the built in speakers and using headphones but the headphone jack at the back is difficult to get to without moving the monitor every time.

A quick, cheap fix I thought of was to just buy a male to female audio extension cable and leave the female end in a more accessible location. However I don't know if having this cable in 100% of the time will prevent any sound from coming from the built in speakers. All I have to test is a male to male 3.5mm and when that's connected no audio plays through the speakers.

Wondering is male to female would be different?
