If issue is overheating (heatsinks clogged with dust), then no - reset will not fix anything.
if issue is failed HDD, then also reset will not fix anything.
Only if bad performance is caused by software - viruses, malware or excessive utilization of ram, only then reset could help.

What is it, how old is it, is it windows or Mac/what version, how much Ram, how full is your HDD and anything else you care to mention that might help get your answer
