To be quite honest it is hard to determine the cause of why it has stopped working from this brief description. But I have a couple of suggestions:

- you may try to do a System Restore (restore system to previous point in time when the software worked). Please see this link for short introduction http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/products/features/system-restore

Note: before doing system restore I recommend you backup your important data on your C: disk (commonly stored in "AppData" folder). Just to be sure.

- better and more preferred route would be to avoid Windows Media Player altogether. There are much better programs out there and I would personally recommend Media Player Classic. The downside of this one is it requires codecs installed on a system. You can get whole package if you download "K-Lite codec pack" (google it). The other solution which comes with a number of built-in codecs and good to use is "VLC Media Player" (also called "VideoLAN player") all in one solution. For playing audio files, WinAmp is great.

As GregCH said, try a System Restore first. Another alternative is VLC Player.

I've been using CCCP codecs that comes with Media Player Classic and it never failed. Try downloading the package below:

http://www.cccp-project.net/

After install, it will open a wizard where you can choose Media Player Classic as the default player for different video formats.
