I'm looking at getting a wifi wireless speaker as this seems to be the way things are heading rather than Bluetooth... My question is if I want to connect it to a laptop that uses an Ethernet connection for internet but has a wifi adapter can the wifi adapter be enabled at the same time as the wired Ethernet too use the wireless speaker?

"Wireless", especially in audio, does not (always) mean "WiFi Ethernet 802.11xyz", it could well mean proprietary scheme, or simple RF (or IR) sender / receiver.

So, lets start from the beginning: What will be the audio source feeding that "wireless speaker"? How many speakers you would need?

The unit I've brought Denon Heos 1 HS2 "Supports latest dual band wireless networks (including 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac standards)." This has both wireless audio streaming and Bluetooth.

TBH wireless audio streaming is quite new to me. The source will be a laptop which has both Wifi and Bluetooth and a tablet that also has both Wifi and bluetooth. I'm ready to learn more...

Heos can do online streaming without the laptop as your source. You only need the HEOS app to control the speaker.
You can even have all your music files on a USB stick or drive connected to it. It does much more than just act as a wireless speaker for your laptop. Sounds good too, You can stream to it but don't need to.
Your laptop isn't really needed at all. You just need your tablet as a remote control for it.

I think there will be some fiddling around when we get it set up as wireless audio is new to me. The idea with the laptop is to stream movies, TV series, Youtube etc to the Heos, so that should work well shouldn't it? It will be similar for the tablet. Have you heard the Heos? It appeared to offer the most in it's price range having both Wireless and Bluetooth and being portable, but I think even the Heos HS2 requires the optional battery pack to make it portable. Would be well worth it though.
