X6-7a notebook connection problems

i was given a x6 7a notebook i am having problem connecting to the internet. it says cannot find server and dns error

I have a similar problem with the x6-7b. I am unable to connect via wi-fi. When I go to turn on the wi-fi it tells me that it is unable to scan. Is there a function key I need to press in order to activate the wireless? I don't have wi-fi problems with my Toshiba or Mac. There is no info in the manual that it came with.
