I have been mapping a fire station 70V PA system that keep losing sound. I found some speakers that were missing transformers and I also found 2 speakers that were tap at 4W, but for 24V system. Is this ok? or do I need to re-tap the transformers?
I'm also new to PA systems

Thanks

I'm no expert at this, but if the speakers were designed for 24V don't run them at 70V. In a speaker, the voltage controls the displacement of the magnet (a gross oversimplification, but sufficient for this discussion). Even if the terminals and wiring can handle the increased voltage (which they might not) you'll be overdriving the magnet, which will make it sound terrible and probably break the driver. Also, the speaker impedance will probably be wrong, resulting in a mismatch with the amplifier.

Short version: probably nothing blows up at low volume settings, but also probably doesn't work well.

Thanks, I will have to take a closer look at these speakers and make the proper taps to the transformers. I got the feeling the installer just wired them incorrectly.
