[citation][nom]Gin Fushicho[/nom]I've never considered console owners technically inclined. I didn't start getting smart about computers until the PS3 came out. I had allllllll the consoles before that. All of them. I had no idea how anything worked. I put the game in, picked up the controller, and played.[/citation]

my point exactly dude most console gamers game on consoles because they are either
A: cheaper than a fancy computer or
B: don't require knowing how things work to get running or
C: don't have to worry about updating hardware all the time or
D: all of the above

the answer is usually D mostevery time i ask a console gamer why they prefer console, and none of teh answers tell me that those guys are tech inclined , actually says quite the oposite.

Console owners are a technically-inclined group? HAHAHAHAHAHA

I find that more outrageous a statement than the idea that a majority of them believe a firmware update will give them 3D capabilities on their TVs. I wouldn't even call computer owners "technically inclined" as a group.

;)

[citation][nom]astidcrisse[/nom]well... aside from the economics involved and patents, just saying out of the box...wouldn't a measly 60hz tv be able to show 30hz/side with some kind of polarized glasses? afterall, the tv does not "make" the 3D, the player/console sends the images interpreted by the tv...Do remember, older voodoo cards came with shitty glasses as well that enabled 3d years ago on standard monitors so to me it looks more like a tech. milking and/or patent thing.[/citation]

You are quite right, any TV can be made to display 3D - however, other hardware is needed, you can't just do it with a firmware update (any way I know of). I think the article shows just as much about the ignorance (ignorance meaning not-knowing, not meaning stupid) of the author as it does about the people who took the poll, and maybe some others as well.

;)

Sad.forced firmware updates normally don't add features, they do what the console manufacture wants(keep them a closed system) but hey it sounded good when you bought it right?? Other os ftw :)

I'll concede that console gaming can be cheaper and easier to get into, what with all the Wii owners for example, but we shouldn't be snobbish just because we chose a platform which is traditionally much less convenient.

I don't see a reason why not, if you have a minimum 120Hz TV. I don't even think you need a firmware update. If you could let the source (such as your PS3) handle the sync signals to the shutter glasses you should be able to display 3D on all 120Hz+ TV's out there.

I hate active shutter glasses though. I'd rather wait until RealD screens come out that I can view with the passive glasses.

Here's a 100% guarantee of playing your games in 3D providing you have two working eyes. It's cheap, it's realistic, it won't give you headaches and anyone can do it without requiring ANY technical knowledge.

Go to your local Wal-Mart, Target, anywhere the games are sold... and buy MONOPOLY, RISK, UNO.. whatever. the REAL game, not some digital version. It will be 100% 3D and it can't get any more realistic.

Disconnect once in a while... play a real game with real people sitting in the same room. If you must, turn it into a drinking game (21+ of course). My friends and I get together to play UNO making others take drinks on wild/draw4 cards. We have a blast... Although I must admit after an hour or two of drink-uno the 3D image does get a little blurry... so I guess it's not without it's hurdles.

Wait 70% think the price of entry to 3D is prohibitive, but 63% think a firmware update is all that's holding them back...
Er...
Does not compute.

To be fair the story is a little misleading, as it the "3d image" on a normal TV - I have several blu-ray discs that have 3d content that can play on my bog standard Sony TV - albeit with the use of those stupid free cardboard 3d glasses.

So you know... if some people think they will get 3d games because the console has had a firmware update its not a million miles away from being true. what the firmware release didnt say was that you had to havd a 3D TV, just like going to the cinema doesnt have a special 3d screen.

Considering all this time we were being told that HDMI 1.4 was required for 3D blu-ray playback... Then a firmware update made all PS3's 3D capable (with the original HDMI 1.3 cable no less), it's not surprising that people think their TV's could be updated to work with firmware.

Its one thing to up-sell your customer, its a completely different thing to blatantly lie to them and tell them they need something they don't. Our local big box stores have been selling "3D HDMI 1.4" $200/3ft cable. And they say car dealers are bad...

While it sounds crazy that console owners, generally a pretty technically-inclined group, believe a firmware update would turn their television into a TV capable of displaying 3D content

That was a funny one...

[citation][nom]guanyu210379[/nom]Can I also update my Q6600 to i7 980 through firmware updates?Hahahahahahaha....[/citation]

Im running 4x SLI GTX480 on my P4 HT so why not! Magical firmware update is magical.

[citation][nom]guardianangel42[/nom]Also, $300 console /= $2,200 Mac book pro.[/citation]

Its still has the same level of performance and usability. Low.
