Acer aspire 5336 dvd/cd won't play

Hello,
Suddenly I cannot get cd's or dvd's to play. Computer recognises they are there but shows content as zero. Played ok up to now. Not aware of having done anything to cause this except had difficulty burning to disc some time ago and then had to get rid of reminder to burn message that came on at every re-boot.

Try cleaning the laser pickups with a cotton swab, gently. If that fails, may need to get a new drive.
