I have an asus n53sv laptop that's several years old and it won't turn on.

When it's plugged in the green battery light on the laptop is glowing and the green light on the transformer on the power cord is glowing. I tried the trick of holding down the power button for 30 second when it's unplugged and the battery is taken out, and then turning it on and it worked! Once. Then the laptop died again a few days later, and this trick doesn't work anymore. See this link for a description of the 'trick' https://www.cnet.com/forums/discussions/asus-laptop-suddenly-won-t-turn-on-624481/

I've looked at old threads (see link below) and soldering in a new DC power jack seems to be a possible course of action, but how do I diagnose the problem to see if this is what actually needs to be done?

Solution
pressing and holding the power input cord at the input jack, if this has any results, would be a way to
tell if it's the jack. but holding the power button for 30 seconds should not have any results if the power
jack is the problem. if you try the power button trick again and it starts, replace the cmos battery.
see if using another power supply helps. could be the supply. also see if it will run on ac alone(pull
the battery). weak batteries can impede startup.
