Audio Spliter Cable Not working

I have an Asus A550C with only one mic/speaker audio jack and my headset has two wires speaker and microphone so i bought an audio splitter cable and my Realtek HD audio manager comes up so i pick headset out of the 3 options microphone,headset or speaker and i found out only the speakers work and not the mic.

Ensure that the splitter cable is 4 pole to two 3 pole jacks.

The way the manual is written (not very explicit) I would interpret that you could use either a headphone or microphone, not both at once.

Try pluggin in just teh microphone of the headset and see if it works. If so, you have a problem. It should work with the built-in microhpone, however., or you can get a usb sound card -- http/www.ebay.com/itm/231033403995 or better.
